“We’re the people saving the world from what might’ve been …” says a line of dialogue from new new movie Tenet.
And those words from Christopher Nolan’s latest time-twisting spectacle speak for themselves.
The film stars John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman), the son of veteran actor Denzel Washington.
Tenet tells the story of time manipulation and time travel when the world needs saving from occurrences yet to even happen.
The complex plot zooms in on the normally straight arrow of time. Then it fires bullets back and forth along the tracks leading towards our present. At the same time it signals the dawn of something big.
Sound mind-bending? This visual masterpiece certainly offers a futuristic treat in terms of cinematography and direction.
From grand scale action, magnificent locales and even time travel, Nolan delivers a larger-than-life canvas.
His crew shot Tenet with Imax cameras, and you are likely to best enjoy the film at an Imax theatre.
Strong cast in ‘Tenet’
There is an excellent cast: Washington delivers a solid performance with Brit heartthrob Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki lending tremendous support.
Bollywood actress Dimple Kapadia puts in a worthy effort as well, while veteran British actor Kenneth Branagh is good too as Andrei Santor.
In terms of the plot, it is confusing even for the most avid of cinema-goers when the story turns into a mystery that needs unlocking.
The reason for this is partly the rushed sound mixing. There has been criticism worldwide about the lack of speech audibility due to an overpowering background score.
This is partly true. It’s also why the overhauled, optimised sound of an Imax theatre may be the ideal place to watch it.
With that being said, don’t be surprised if you find yourself drawn towards an encore with subtitles once the film goes digital in a couple of months!
- Tenet is now showing at cinemas nationwide and rates a 7/10 (for now).
