The Match has not been kind to the star-studded duo of Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady. They remain winless as a golf pairing in this unique head-to-head charity event after Mickelson and Brady were defeated by Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers in The Match 4 at The Reserve Golf Course at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana, on Tuesday.

There was so much hype heading into this matchup as the event featured four of the sporting world’s biggest superstars. DeChambeau and Mickelson, of course, are major golf champions, with Lefty winning the PGA Championship just months ago. On the other hand, Brady and Rodgers are the reigning Super Bowl MVP and regular-season MVP, respectively, in the National Football League.

Experience counts for nothing as Brady and Mickelson lose again

Brady and Mickelson are no strangers to this golfing event. Mickelson appeared in the inaugural edition of the Match, beating rival Tiger Woods. Lefty then teamed up with Brady in the second edition of the Match, where they lost to the pairing of Peyton Manning and Woods. Mickelson then rebounded from that loss with a victory in the Match 3 alongside partner Charles Barkley as they outlasted Stephen Curry and Manning.

The 2021 edition of the Match used a modified alternate shot format, and it was DeChambeau who drew first blood, chipping in on the first hole for a birdie to go 1 up. Brady and Mickelson battled back, however, with momentum swinging their way in the third hole.

After DeChambeau blasted a fairway wood on the 392-yard par-4 third hole to within six feet off the pin, Brady answered with an exquisite drive that landed next to DeChambeau’s shot. The pairing of DeChambeau and Rogers then three-putted to hand the hole to Brady and Mickelson.

Brady and Mickelson took the lead the following hole, but DeChambeau and Rogers recovered as they headed into the back nine with the match all tied. DeChambeau and Rogers pulled away in the closing stages, winning three straight holes to give themselves an advantage they wouldn’t relinquish. Aaron Rodgers sealed the win with a birdie on the 16th hole to record a 3&2 victory over Brady and Mickelson.

Rodgers simply outstanding in “The Match” debut

Aaron Rodgers was outstanding in this event as he was responsible for five birdie putts. He also drove the ball well with the pairing of Rodgers and DeChambeau using the Green Bay quarterback’s tee shot on six of seven holes. That’s an incredible statistic given DeChambeau’s unbelievable power off the tee.

Unfortunately for Mickelson and Brady, they were not consistent with their tee shots as they struggled to put the ball in the fairway. Brady managed to hit four birdie putts on Tuesday, but they were just not able to keep their game together on the critical back nine.

Mickelson and Brady might have lost again, but the important thing was they were able to raise money for the involved charities. At the event’s conclusion, the donations and contributions will help provide 6.3 million meals for Feeding America and a whopping $2.6 million to My Brother’s Keeper.
